Patrick MOLARD
The Man
The playing of Patrick Molard is unique in that his high degree of skill and musicality has been attained by following a different path from that trodden by other players on the way to top level. Domiciled in his native Brittany, circumstances precluded his participation in the competition mainstream where uniformity of style as well as medals can be one of the rewards. The result of this is a purity of expression instilled during his time with master players R.U.Brown and RB.Nicol of Balmoral, enriched with a parallel study and the teaching of his own native Breton music .He has played a large part during recent years in the revival of Breton culture and has performed on concert platforms throughout the world.
In these recordings he demonstrates the scope of his Piobaireachd repertoire.
In the 'Munros Salute' and 'Clanranalds' Salute much of the Balmoral style is evident with the extended difference between the lengths of the long and short notes impossible to gain purely from staff notation. The 'Waking of the Bride groom', from David Glen's Collection is a short piece which has been largely overlooked. This rendition makes us wonder why. The tune' Fhailt Na misk' is from the unpublished cainteareachd manuscript of Colin Campbell and the presentation here, demonstrates complete understanding of the ancient syllabic notation and its transference to the stave. The Piobaireachd Society collections are the source for the melodic Sir Cameron of Lochiel.s Salute. This rendition demonstrates the thrust and the forward movement required in the portrayal of this music. A nameless tune often used as a prelude by the famous John Macdonald of Inverness and recently rescued from archive tape recordings, demonstrates superb skill and fluency with the difficult top hand technique. The Lament for the Only Son is taken from the manuscript of Donald Macdonald and gives different perspective of a well known piece All of these tunes are performed on different makes of bagpipe including vintage sets by Gavin MacDougall of Aberfeldy and David Glen Edinburgh as well as a modern day replica set of1847 Alexander Glen pipes manufactured in Brittany
The overall result is an excellent recital of piobaireachd music played with verve and emotion using a wide range of quality bagpipe sound to play styles and settings from a bygone era.
