Brittany's transport picture throughout history
The industrial age and the coming of the railways wrought fundamental changes in the population's life-style. The rail network in Brittany, based on a pattern imposed by Napoleon III, divided our country in two: the only solution found to the problem this raised was to build, in central Brittany, a narrow-gauge system known as the "Breton Network".
Two world wars wreaked their havoc... Struggles were waged to open new doors for Brittany on the outside world. "Expressways" have been built to link our bigger towns. Today, efforts are being made to increase train speeds (TGV)...
Thanks to recently-created air and maritime services, Bretons have recovered outlets to the rest of Europe and the entire planet. By the year 2000, they will be able to reach, by land, sea and air, every previously inaccessible destination. Provided they all strive together.
